Fence Gate Hardware: Latches, Hinges, and Closers

Gates are the part of a fence that moves, so they're the part that wears out first. Picking gate hardware with some care separates a gate that still swings clean after a few Middle Tennessee winters from one dragging in the dirt by spring. Around Columbia and Spring Hill we get called for sagging gates far more often than for failed fence panels.

Why the gate fails before the fence does

A fence panel just stands there. A gate carries its whole weight on one edge and swings over uneven ground. Then it gets slammed by kids, by wind, by whoever's dropping off a package. All of that lands on the hinges and latch.

Our ground makes it worse. Clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, and in plenty of Maury and Williamson County yards you hit limestone shallow enough that a post can't be set as deep as you'd like. A post that felt solid in August can shift by February. Add an ice storm and a soaked wood gate, and marginal hardware gives.

What happens next is predictable. A slow lean. The latch stops lining up. Somebody starts lifting the gate to close it, and a few months of that works the screws loose in the post. The fix is almost never the gate. It's what's holding it.

Hinge types, and why heavy or wide gates need better ones

Strap hinges are what most people picture. They spread the load across the frame instead of concentrating it at one point, which is why they hold up on wood.

Barrel and bullet hinges, common on ornamental steel and aluminum, ride on a pin and let you adjust tension. Good ones carry a weight rating, and that rating matters more than the finish. A wide double gate puts serious leverage on the top hinge, and a hinge sized for a garden gate won't hold it.

Here's what we weigh before picking hardware.

Through-bolted hardware beats lag screws on anything heavy. Lags pull out of wood over time, especially in a post that sees a wet spring and a dry August. Planning a wide driveway gate? We'd rather talk hinges up front than come back for a repair, a good chunk of our gate installation and repair work.

Latch types, and where pool code changes the answer

A basic gravity latch is fine on a back garden gate. It drops into a catch, it forgives a little misalignment, and it doesn't cost much.

Pool gates are a different animal. Gates in a pool barrier are generally required to be self-closing and self-latching, with the release set where a small child can't reach it. Pedestrian gates usually have to swing away from the pool too. The exact requirements depend on which code edition your city or county has adopted, so confirm the specifics with your local codes or building department before you buy anything.

Magnetic latches have become the go-to for pool gates because they pull the gate shut and catch even when it's slightly out of square. Gravity latches are less forgiving of a gate that's drifted. Spring and hydraulic closers both work, though hydraulic ones tend to be quieter and easier on the frame.

Drop rods, anti-sag kits, and double gates

A double gate needs one leaf to stay put while the other swings. That's the drop rod's job. It pins the inactive leaf into a sleeve set in the ground so the active leaf's latch has something solid to catch. Skip it and both leaves float. The latch wears, the gap widens, and the gate stops meeting in the middle.

Anti-sag kits are a cable and a turnbuckle run corner to corner, and they'll pull a racked wood gate back into square. Within limits. The cable has to run from the top corner on the hinge side down to the bottom corner on the latch side, so tightening it draws the drooping outer edge back up toward the hinge. Install it the other way and every turn of the turnbuckle pulls the gate further down, which we see more than you'd think.

A turnbuckle fixes a frame that's out of square. It won't rescue a leaning post or an undersized hinge. If the post moved, cranking the cable just loads a bad foundation. Diagnose before you tighten.

Galvanized, stainless, and Middle Tennessee humidity

Summers here are humid and winters are wet. Hardware that would last a long time in a dry climate rusts here. Hot-dip galvanized is the workhorse. The zinc coating is thick and holds up outdoors for years. The catch is that cutting or drilling it exposes bare steel, and that spot rusts first.

Stainless costs more up front and does better around chlorine, splash, and constant moisture. For pool gates especially, stainless fasteners earn their keep.

The mistake we run into most is mixed metals. Put a plain steel bolt through an aluminum frame in a wet spot and you get galvanic corrosion. The two react and one goes fast. Match fasteners to your hardware and frame, or isolate them with a washer.

What good gate hardware tends to cost

Hardware is a small slice of a fence project's total and a large slice of whether it stays trouble-free. Heavy-duty adjustable hinges cost noticeably more than the basic set bundled with a gate kit, though the gap is modest against the whole job. A later service call to straighten a sagging gate usually costs more than the upgrade would have.

A few things move that number.

Automation is the one to think through early. Hinges and posts sized for a gate you push by hand often aren't sized for a motor swinging it hundreds of times. Common questions about gate hardware

Why does my gate sag even though the hinges are tight?

Usually the frame has racked out of square or the hinge post has leaned. Tight hinges on a leaning post still give you a sagging gate. Check whether the post is plumb first. If it's sound and the frame has gone diamond-shaped, an anti-sag cable can pull it back. If the post moved, that's the real repair.

Do pool gates really need special hardware?

Yes, in almost every case. Pool barrier gates are generally required to be self-closing and self-latching, with the release out of a small child's easy reach, and pedestrian gates typically have to swing away from the pool. Which code edition applies depends on your jurisdiction, so check with your local building or codes office first.

Can I upgrade hardware on a gate I already have?
